Over the last weekend, there was a few grass fires and it was between our area. Firefighters responded to three grass fires in the Lawton area on Saturday. Fire departments from Flower Mound, Valley View, and Geronimo contained the fires quickly.
During the winter months in Oklahoma, the grass is very dry and with the lack of rainfall, the grass in our area is very susceptible to fires. With Elgin sitting next to the artillery range and the interstate, we have a lot open grass areas to be concerned about.
Locally, we have a very good volunteer fire department that responds quickly, but it is up to us to help prevent the fires from happening. Outside of the fires that start on the military base, most of the grass fires occur because of humans being careless. Everyone needs to be aware that even a small spark can create a grass fire.
So, everyone needs to do their part to help keep our community save from grass fires this winter.
